PATRICK DUNN

Artist Patrick DunnI love the freedom of watercolors, but I always feel the need to regain some control with my pen in the finished product
Patrick Dunn was born and raised in Alexandria, Louisiana, his first art contest win coming in the1st grade. After bringing home that blue ribbon, he knew he had found what to do with his future: paint and draw. Taking art classes during high school and participating in various summer art programs, Patrick enrolled at Northeast Louisiana University (now Louisiana University at Monroe), majoring in art, eventually transferring to Louisiana State University (LSU). He loved the studio atmosphere but was not very interested in academics, so he withdrew from LSU and relocated to Oregon to work on his uncle’s horse ranch. During those years, he didn’t have a lot of time to paint and draw.
Patrick met his partner (now husband) while in graduate school in Charleston, S.C., After they moved to Berkeley, CA, in 1990, he reentered the art world as a framing apprentice for a gallery and frame shop with multiple locations around the San Francisco Bay area. That was the move that changed his life. They remained there four years. The next move was to St. Louis, Missouri, where Patrick opened the Patrick Q. Dunn Custom Framing business. After two more moves in the Midwest over the next decade, the couple decided to move for life rather than for work (plus, he’d had enough of snow), and they ended up in Pensacola, Florida. During those decades, Patrick was working so much and very caught up in his daily life so that his drawing and painting remained on the back burner.
Patrick is primarily retired now and he finds the time to paint and draw again. He loves to take his retired greyhound racer, Bentley, for long walks, stopping often to take photos of Pensacola’s beautiful land and seascapes, the inspiration for most of his current artwork. He is currently an exhibiting member at Quayside Art Gallery in Pensacola, Florida
